Match Summary
After three weeks of ground closures across the New England region due to rain, hail and snow, the Nomads returned for their second game back and showed why they are genuine finals contenders. A strong and convincing win over the Gunnedah Bulldogs secured fourth spot on the ladder with one round to play, reinforcing the team’s finals credentials.
The Bulldogs pushed hard and kept the Nomads accountable throughout the day, but New England’s resilience, fitness and belief shone through. With unity and spirit peaking at the right stage of the season, momentum continues to build.
Unfortunately, neither the Gunnedah nor the Nomads women were able to field enough players for a match. This marked the end of the women’s season, although a core group remains committed to building a competitive side next year with ambitions of pushing towards a premiership.
As the saying goes, “You don’t win premierships in June,” and the Nomads appear to have timed their run perfectly, with this performance sending a clear message to the competition.
Despite an unsettled line-up with eight changes, it took just 35 seconds for Jimmy Walters to kick the first of his five goals for the day. Captain Hunter Green led from the front with a dominant seven-goal performance.
The defence took time to adjust to the return of Jack Tapper, who was tasked with containing the opposition’s key forward. Donovan Hansell continued his strong development with another composed defensive display.
In the midfield, Gus Russell, Charlie Keiller, John-Paul Canavan, Bobby Boyd and David “Modra” Richards worked tirelessly to steady the game under pressure. Aidan Barry produced one of his best all-round performances of the season, again proving his value as a versatile “Mr Fix It.”
Mid-season recruit Zack Goldfinch was unfortunately forced from the field at half time with a knee injury. Since arriving at the club, he has been a steadying influence and his versatility will be missed during recovery.
A highlight of the day came when Simon Li kicked two goals, breaking a seven-year goal drought and sparking unforgettable celebrations that captured the spirit of the group.
From a coaching perspective, the Nomads are building strong momentum into finals football. While there are still areas to refine, the growth, belief and talent in this group are clear. Considering the club’s recent formation, a return to finals in 2025 is already a significant achievement, with much still to come.
